I have had to stay away from Youtube for reasons like this. I used to watch Days videos over there all the time, but users kept commenting that EJ gave Sami a chose and that means it isn't rape. It just makes me sick. |

I'm with you. I didn't even know the rape was a controversy until I got to other message boards a year ago! It's just always has been common sense to me. Rape is rape. |

That's how I discovered Second Chances. I was watching clips from the show at the NBC site and happened to notice some of the comments being posted. It floored me that anyone could possibly think Sami should be with her rapist. It disturbed me so much that I stopped going to NBC for clips and turned to YouTube where I discovered Lumi videos which led to Canuck's clip site and then here - a sanctuary for the voice of reason. |

OK guys I need you to read and comment. Check my grammar and spelling. I want to send off this weekend. ******************************* Dear XXXX, I am writing to you today as a parent who abhors violence and the continual avoidance of the media not to combat it, but promote it or accept it. I'm sure that you have all read the news in the last few weeks about a 15 year old high school student who was raped outside a homecoming dance in Richmond, California. As you have heard there were several who participated, but even more disturbing were the people who just sat back, watched and did nothing. They are desensitized to the violence and have accepted it. The desensitizing of a violent act happens partially because of the media whether it be music, video, television or radio. It is a contributing factor whether you want to believe it or not. With the rape incident at the high school, I have been working with a group of adults who have formed a foundation to help our troubled youth reject the violence and help themselves achieve their goals. These individuals are ex-gang members who have turned around their lives and are wanting to change the world for our kids and make it better. They have been working with the aftermath of the rape incident and at lunch the other day we talked about the influence of the media. From their own experiences, they told me that the media has an incredible influence in determining who you are and what you do especially as a teen. When they were in gangs and younger, they themselves used music and video to pump themselves up before they would go out and do harm. They said if you see enough violence you begin to believe that it is acceptable. Consequences don't enter into the picture because the bombardment of the media says it is ok. One of the members told me that she would listen to her iPod before hitting the prison yard to pump herself up enough so she could protect herself. She was ready to do anything if needed. You ask why am I writing to you. I am writing to you because as a Days of our Lives fan for over 25 years, I stopped regularly watching a couple of years ago when you promoted a relationship between EJ DiMera and Sami Brady. It disturbed me immensely that you would take a rape, accept it and convert it into romance. I was disgusted, but more importantly I want you to realize that your actions do influence those who watch. You have fans that have accepted the rape as nothing or they have dismissed it. What does that say to you? You have influence. Your show is a daytime soap opera for gosh sakes. You're show is supposed to be about changing and evolving relationships. It supposed to be about family. It's supposed to be about romance, love, and loyalty with a little good versus evil thrown in. It should never be about the acceptance of a rape into a romance. Your storyline between EJ DiMera and Sami Bray continues to desensitize people to accept that a romance can develop from a rape. Are you kidding me. No rape victim comes back to love their rapist. As adults in today's society we must take the responsibility of our youth and I mean all our youth not just those in your backyard. If we cannot help the next generation what does that say about us as a people. Please rethink your story line. Violence against women should never be acceptable. Sincerely, XXX |

Tammy, I think you should point out that the rape happened in your district.. On the storyline..I think you should also touch upon the fact that Producers, writers, characters, and actors all at the time discussed it as rape. The magazine interviews conducted by the actors called it rape and somehow it is no longer mentioned let alone even acknowledged as such, you can point out why it wasn't bought up when Sami told Rafe about her "life" and the fact that Johnny is somehow the product of that most disturbing act. Why do the writers have character's discuss something that happened over 10 years ago (Sami's death row) but never hear about this which occurred 3 years ago. Millions of Teens (like the one who got raped) view this and other soap operas and are very impressionable at their age and might think it's okay to be manipulated by the person who harmed you just because they saw it on TV. There is no excuse for that garbage.... |

Revision for your commenting. Thanks you guys. This is important. Dear XXXX, I am writing to you today as a parent who abhors violence and the continual avoidance of the media not to combat it, but promote it or accept it. I'm sure that you have all read the news in the last few weeks about a 15 year old high school student who was raped outside a homecoming dance in Richmond, California. These individuals are ex-gang members who have turned around their lives and are wanting to change the world for our kids and make it better. They have been working with the aftermath of the rape incident and at lunch the other day, we talked about the influence of the media. From their own experiences, they told me that the media has an incredible influence in determining who you are and what you do especially as a teen. It disturbed me immensely that you would take a rape, accept it and convert it into a romance. I was disgusted, but more importantly I want you to realize that your actions do influence those who watch. At the time of the original airing, producers, directors, writers, actors and the press referred to as a rape. It was an act of violence against Sami, but it seems that you have dismissed this fact completely. You have fans that accept this rape as a romance. Frankly they don't believe that it ever existed and that Sami chose it. What does that say to you? You have influence over millions of teens who watch this show every day. What are you saying to them? How does your message influence how young teens view themselves or others? Your show is a daytime soap opera for gosh sakes. You're show is supposed to be about changing and evolving relationships. It supposed to be about family. It's supposed to be about romance, love, and loyalty with a little good versus evil thrown in. It should never be about the acceptance of a rape into a romance. Your story line between EJ DiMera and Sami Bray continues to desensitize people to accept that a romance can develop from a rape. Are you kidding me. No rape victim comes back to love their rapist. As adults in today's society, we must take the responsibility of our youth and I mean all our youth not just those in your backyard. Walk in my shoes one day, I don't think you would continue to perpetuate this act of violence as acceptable. If we cannot help the next generation, what does that say about us as a people. Please rethink your story line. Violence against women should never be acceptable. Sincerely, XXX Edited by tje8375, Friday Nov 20 2009, 06:03 PM.

Even if they don't read it, I'm sure someone will....maybe you should send it to that guy Meng...the one who went with the stars to Detroit...he is VP I think...anyway...it looks really good and remember, in the end..even if this doesn't make an impact at least you are doing something, it's better than keeping our mouth's shut. |

I think we could use a new influx of rape is not romance banners as well. I would love to see something like Lucas holding Sami, and a picture of evil ykw...It could say Rape Is Not Romance at the top and at the bottom it could say something like Sami always wanted Lucas, she gave herself freely to him, maybe we could work on the words a bit...but you all know what I am trying to say... |

Nice article particularly about rapemi: http://www.daystalk.com/2010/01/18/the-r-word/ Oh and if you can, people should leave comments. It looks like the rapemis already got to this article and are saying that the rape is completely forgotten, was a mistake, etc. Edited by FrenchToast, Monday Jan 18 2010, 01:48 PM.
