I agree. I think Sami sees in Rafe the same potential for safety, stability, comfort that she saw in Austin & Brandon without having to be the pursuer. Here is this guy that epitomizes the father she idolizes and he wants her, not Carrie, not Nicole. The problem for Sami is the very same one that Lucas has always faced, wanting the good guy/girl because it seems healthy and right but being bored to tears and never fully alive in the relationship. Rafe's a good guy; he just not the best guy. Lumi are soulmates.

"Sami is quiet, claims to have had a bad dream, Rafe comforts her, tries to get her to tell him about it, she doesn’t remember it. She tells him how much she loves him, they begin to kiss, and we leave them.


Rafe’s bedroom is awash in light, Sami is dreaming of shooting EJ, with Rafe coming up behind her, asking her “Sami, what have you done”? She awakens with a start, Rafe is there telling her she had another bad dream. Sami talks of how 24 hrs. ago, she was going to marry EJ, berating herself for all the time she wasted, her pride and stupidity, how did not want to marry EJ, was doing it out of spite. Rafe talks of how he knew when EJ walked in with that baby, that he did it, and how determined he was to prove it. And how sorry he is he did not tell Sami this right away. She replies she would not have believed him then anyway. EJ had, by then, had her so convinced he was such a good guy. Rafe tells her how he spent so much time thinking, knowing that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. She laughs, she is so much trouble, so impetuous, her life is full of surprises. He replies his is a drag, and he’d like to be surprised. Now he gets out of bed, telling Sami she is just impossible. He opens the drawer in the bedside table, saying he wanted to save this for some time when they were on a deserted beach, takes a ring out of the box, telling her he cannot offer her a castle in Spain, but he will always give her a roof over her head, bring her coffee, rub her back, and be the one who is always there for her.
He kneels down on the side of the bed, asks Sami to marry him. Sami has been puzzled at what he was doing and now, cannot believe this. She talks of her life being such a mess, but Rafe wants to share that messy life with her. And now, he did ask her a question…she smiles, will I marry you? Yes, oh Yes, yes, yes. He slips the ring on her finger, hugs, kisses, come here, you, says Sami.

I'm not sure if TPTB are doing this on purpose but they are totally paralleling Lucas and Sami now...Lucas the guy who loved Sami will all his heart but could never really get passed the bad side of her, so would at times choose the good girls who he would see at the end had nothing he really wanted....now Sami is choosing the good guy as in Rafe while knowing that she would be very happy and PREFER a guy like Lucas...couple that with the fact that both took shots at Ej signifies that they both are equals and they know how one feels now....I bet Sami will never critize Lucas now for shooting Ej, and would realize now what a problem it was for her not to testify in his defense...wouldn't that be a great way to bring back Lucas....to have him walk in the court room as a special witness for her defense...to testify about just how much of a great mother Sami is and how she would never do this unless she was at wits end.

Lumi are cut from the same cloth; it's why they are so perfect for each other. Long before they fell in love with each other, they were both looking for the same thing. Lucas wanted a woman completely different from the mother who had hurt him so much and Sami who felt abandoned by her father was looking for a man who she idealizes Roman to be - someone who will always be on her side, never leave her, and have the family life that she feels was stolen from her (talking about her childhood here, not the family she let EJ steal from her). Lumi always wanted the same things out of life and IMO, they both overlooked the other in their youth for the same reason, they feared themselves and thought they needed someone "good" to balance out the "bad" inside themselves. After all those years of chasing their idealized mates, they both succeeded in catching them and then didn't want them - in 2006, Lucas had Carrie and was still deeply in love with Sami, and Sami had Austin and was still deeply in love with Lucas.

I think Sami loves Rafe; I think Lucas loved Carrie and Chloe too, but none of those come close to being on the same scale that Lumi love(d) each other. Until Chloe cheated on Lucas, they had a fairly healthy relationship in a lot of ways. Chloe appreciated Lucas and she was good to his children. The same is true of Rafe toward Sami, but it's still not the real thing. And, if it were real life, it might be enough but Soaps aren't about who can provide the most stable home life. They are about deep, true, passionate, love of your life love, love that keeps two flawed people together through all of the obstacles, after all the failed love affairs with others, all the times they've hurt each other type of love. Lumi kept coming back to one another through everything that went wrong, whether it was obstacles from others or from themselves and even Tomlin knows that to this day, you can not put those two in the same room together without setting off the fire alarms. They just have it and it outshines every other character in a scene, always has, always will. Sami is much more in love with her image of Rafe than Rafe himself, but Lucas she loved much deeper in spite of knowing every flaw and every mistake he has ever made .... and Lucas loved her exactly the same way.

I also agree with you about the shootings. It seemed to me that Sami was never mad at Lucas for shooting EJ; she was mad at him for getting caught and having to go to prison. Sami's greatest fear still seems to be abandonment and that part of her was reacting to the fact that Lucas was leaving her. It didn't matter how irrational that was and that it wasn't Lucas' fault, the outcome was still the same, he was leaving her. And, even though from Lucas' perspective he was doing the selfless thing and trying to make it all easier for her to move on with her life, telling Sami not to visit him hit her as a rejection. I think in Sami's mind, she lost Lucas when he shot EJ and got himself sent to prison. Now from my perspective and I'm sure Lucas' it was when she decided to sleep with her rapist while Lucas was in prison. But either way, I don't think Sami has believed that Lucas is an option for a long time and that is why Rafe seems like he must be the Mr. Right that she was supposed to have ended up with... Let Lucas return as a definite option, and I don't think she will remember Rafe's last name.
